My son's car has the left front wheel spindle mashed by the wheel bearing. It has DRUM brakes. He is having a hard time finding a spindle for it...can the thread area that is mashed be reworked or will that cause metal fatigue and be dangerous?

No, restoring the threads would result in a less strong spindle, with increased possibilty of a failure resulting in a nasty accident - not a happy thought.
