Classic/Antique Car Repair: low oil pressure when warm, old wives tales, low oil pressure
QuestionThanks for the info. Would the SAE40W or SAE50W be non detergent?
AnswerNon- detergent oil is pretty much unavailable in any grade, and I don't advise it anyway, as even if you could find it, it would be very low quality oil. Buy modern oil- it is MUCH better oil, and don't be taken in by the old wives tales about detergents causing problems in old engines - that is so much poppycock - just use the best oil you can buy. I buy NAPA premium single weight oil for all my cars, SAE30W.
I did notice your initial statement that you have been using non-detergent oil in your car - and did not comment on it at that time, but since you brought it up again, I have to acquaint you with the current thinking on the subject. Your current oil may not be non-detergent anyway - look on the can and see what the Petroleum Institute symbol is on it - I'm betting it's grade SL or SM - that is detergent oil. If it is ungraded by the Petroleum institute, it may be recycled oil - I would not use it.
