Classic/Antique Car Repair: 427 rear main seal, j c whitney, auto parts shop

Question
oil leak from rear of engine (not the pan).  I would like to replace the rear main seal for the second time but I don't know how, such as which way should it face and if /how to apply any sealing compound.  Also which (maker) seal should I use I have a 66 427 chevy Hi Perf.

HI  is the engine out of the car ? or in the car ?
if in the car you can get a rear seal kit, I would ask at auto parts shop or (j c Whitney.com ) they should have it , and trw or any brand name is good with some silicone sealer on the pan with new gaskets.
