Classic/Antique Car Repair: 66 Impala trans swap, clutch pedal, speed column
QuestionHello, I want to replace a Powerglide transmission in a 66 Impala with a 3 speed column shifted TH-350 or TH-400 or possibly a 4 (3 + overdrive) speed column shifted auto. Currently the car has a none original 283 (originally the car had a straight six). I will be putting either a 454 or a 502 in the car. Won't I need to get a different steering column; if so, where would I find such a product? I've never attempted anything like this and I'm sure there is other things I need to do, but I don't know what yet. Any help would be appreciated, Thank You Very Much, John
Answer Hi John;
I would put in a 4 speed on the floor as you will have to do a bit of work if you wish to put in a 3 speed colum shifter as you will have to find a old car with all of the parts to replace and with a 4 speed or 3 speed floor shift you will have to do nothing or just replace the colum shift from a auto to a std. and you will still have to get the clutch pedal welded in and the clutch bracket from the frame to the engine , it is a bit of work but it can be done, and for parts you can do a serch on the web and you will find a few places that have parts .try( 66 chevy colum shift parts.com ) I just did it and there are a few places ok.
Good Luck
