Ford Repair: 2004 Mercury Sable, coolant temperature sensor, mercury sable

I have a 04 Mercury Sable 103k miles.  Recently it feels like the car is not changing gears. So i thought it was the transmission.  I got a check engine code that reveals Coolant Temperature Sensor fault.  Would this cause a car from properly shifting?

I can help you better if you know the code. In extreme overheating instances yes the computer might change the shift patterns or restrict engine speed. A faulty coolant sensor might cause the same problems as overheating.
