Ford Repair: 1991 F150 4X4 w/ 302 thermostat replacement, sears craftsman, f150 4x4

I am trying to remove the old thermostat on a 1991 F150 4X4 w/ 302, but cannot get a wrench or socket onto the bolts holding the old cover in place. Is there a special tool or technique to get onto the bolts in this tight space?

I have a nice 1/4" swivel socket that does wonders on those.  It's a swivel but has a socket built-in for very tight spaces, sears/craftsman has them but they can be expensive.  That's all I've used and I don't know any other way to do it.  Hope this helps,
