Ford Repair: 1997 hood release on Ford Escort, release location, hamilton al

Greetings.  I cannot find the lever to open the hood on my 1997 Escort.  Silly as it may seem, there is nothing that pulls or pushes resulting in the safety catch on the hood to release.  Any help?

  It's been a long time since I've been near an Escort, so my memory is fuzzy on the hood release location.  But there are only so many places manufacturers put them (especially Ford).  Your best bet if it's not under the dash is either next to your left leg under the dash (right in front of where the door closes) or on the left side of the driver's seat on the floor.  Hope this helps.
