Ford Repair: 86 Ford F150 xlt lariat, ford f150 xlt, ford f150

I have a 86 Ford F150 xlt extended cab,lariat package.Question: I went to replace the bulb in the license plate light and its just a loose wire with a connection at the end with a small ball. Looks as if the ball/connection just goes into some other wiring.I looked under the truck and can't find any wiring close that this connects to....so basically I need the wiring diagram for the license plate light.I just bought the truck,mint condition but it also smells like gas?????

Betty, there are a few different types of license plate lights. Most of them ground themselves out on the bumper.  You can buy a license plate light assembly at a parts store for less than 5 dollars.  It will require you to splice into the hot wire (which should be the loose wire that you are talking about).  I hope this helps,   Jason
