Ford Repair: Duel Fuel Tanks, fuel guage, fuel gauge

I have a 1989 F-150 with duel tanks.  First, the fuel gauge for the front tank stopped working.  About 6 months later(now), I am not getting any fuel out of the front tank.  I did hear this was a common problem and I know it could be numerous possible things causing the problem.  I was wondering what I should check for and in what order.

I suggest you backtrack from the tank, check for voltage to the pump or fuel guage sender there, then at the switch that changes between tanks. I don't recall there being a valve on this year, just the switch changes. Pretty common fuel pump failures on these, but inspect the connectors coarefully for any damage or wires pulled out.
