Ford Repair: 351 engine, ford 4x4, chevy motor
QuestionI just bought a motor which I was told was a 305 HO motor. After the rear seal I bought was too small twice, and the oil pump is also, I believe it is 351. How do I tell if it is a 305, 351 w, or a 351 c? And if it is a 351,will it bolt up to my 5 speed trans. in my 1989 Ford Mustang GT? The motor is from a 1984 Ford 4X4 1/2 PU.

Well...your problem may be that, if you were getting a rear main seal for a 305, it's not going to work. A 305 is a Chevy motor...Ford made a 302. That could be your problem right there. It's possible that the motor's a 351 since those did come in trucks but it'd be a 351W since they haven't (to my knowledge) used 351C's since the late 70's. I'm willing to bet that if you go get a seal for a 302 instead of a 305 it'll work just fine. Hope this helps.
