Ford Repair: Drum brakes, mercury grand marquis, rubber mallet
QuestionI have a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis. Without thinking about it, I put on my parking/emergency brake. Now it's stuck. I've been trying to get the drum off, but can't. I've turned the brake adjustment to contract the shoes to what I believe is the full amount, but the drum still won't come off. I was thinking about using a puller/gear puller, but I haven't found one big enough. Any ideas on how I can get the drum off, so I can release the p/e brake?
AnswerJoe-
Drums are always tricky. Sometimes they just get stubborn. You might try "massaging" it off with a hammer (preferably a dead blow or a rubber mallet, but you know what they say about desperate times...). If you really wanted to, you could probably also work it off with a 10 or 15lb slide hammer (that's slide, not sledge). If it gets to that point, though you should try and rent one...not much of a chance you'll ever need it again. Hope this helps.
