Ford Repair: red fluid, jonathan red, ford taurus

Dear Steve.
I have a qeustion on a friends 1995 ford Taurus, 4 door. He states there is an accumulation of red fluid , on the floor , about 11 to 14 inches(behind) from the center of the radiator. Can yopu give me a possible cause to tell him. That way we might seem smarter to the mechanic.

  Red fluid usually means one of two things.  Either a transmission leak (like a bad gasket or something of that sort) or a leak in the power steering system.  Judging from your description of the leak, my initial guess would be a transmission leak.  It shouldn't be too expensive to fix, but it is a bit labor intensive.  Hope this helps.
