Ford Repair: tranny swap, ford e150, aods
QuestionHi Steve I have a 1990 ford E150 short wheel base van with a 4.9 L6 and a c6 tranny I want to put a pre electronic aod in place of the c6 they look pretty close but that only counts in handgernades and horse shoes. Thanks Ken
AnswerKen-
I'm almost positive an AOD won't bolt up to a C6 bellhousing. Now if you could find an AOD bellhousing for a 4.9L motor you'd be in business (after some other changes like a new AOD torque converter and flexplate). You'll also need to modify the driveshaft for length. All of that being said, I'm just not sure that an AOD in such a big vehicle is such a good idea. AODs are the weak link in overdrive automatics and I'm not sure it'd live a long life in such a big van. But hey...I suppose anything is worth a shot. Hope this helps.
