Ford Repair: SQUEAKY BELT, dayco belts, gates belts
QuestionI HAVE A 1988 FORD TEMPO. 2.2 ENGINE. WE HAVE AN ANNOYING BELT SQEAKING. I CANNONT DETERMINE WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THE BELTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED NOT LONG AGO. I USED DAYCO BELTS. THE V BELT THAT GOES AROUND THE ALTERNATOR APPEARS SHINY AND GLAZED. I CANNOT SEE ANYTHING OUT OF ALIGNMENT, ALTHOUGH JUST LOOKING IS PROBABLY NOT VERY ACCURATE. I OBSERVED THE BELTS AS THE CAR WAS RUNNING. THE ALTERNATOR BELT APPEARS LOOSE TO ME. FROM A SIDE VIEW THE BELT SEEMS TO BE MOVING EXCESSIVELY BACK AND FORTH CREATING A WIDE OPTICAL ILLUSION PATTERN. THE CAR DOES SEEM TO DO FINE AT IDLE. HOWEVER, SHORTLY AFTER I TURNED THE A/C ON THE SQUEAL PRESENTED ITSELF.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!
MIKE
AnswerHello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Nothing against Dayco, but I have never had good luck with them. They are a cheap brand from Auto-zone. I suggest that you use Gates belts. As far as the adjustment goes, you might have to switch to a smaller belt, IF you can't get the correct tensioning out of the Alternator. Go to a local parts store and ask for the correct belt(s) for you vehicle. Also, be sure you tell them your CORRECT engine size..you have a 2.3L, not a 2.2L.
Hope this helps,
Erik
