Ford Repair: cam, ford contour, head gasket

Question
1999 ford contour.2.0 engine, twin overhead cam,
I put a head gasket on it, I relized the  cam on the exhaust side was partially broke so I got a new one and replaced it while I was into it,Now you can turn that cam freely,the car starts and runs but is rough idle and surges, everything is torque down and bolted down,I have never ran inyo anything of this sort.

 If the engine ran well before the work was done, I would recheck your work.
