AnswerI would recommend taking the vehicle to small, independent repair shop. A small shop should be able to diagnose and repair a problem like this cheaper than a large chain store, or Dealer. I couldn't tell you exactly where the noise is coming from, or what is causing it, without hearing it. It could be a simple as a U-joint in the driveshaft, but it could be a bad rear axle bearing or gear. Changing a U-joint should cost around $150-$200, repairing a problem inside of the rear axle could cost $750-$1000. If this vehicle is in good condition, it may be worth repairing. Because of its age, I doubt that you would get much for this vehicle on a trade-in. Buying a used car would give you a car payment, and the same uncertainty as you have with this vehicle.
I hope this helps,
Dave
