Ford Repair: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, ford contour, diagnostic check

Hi,  I have a 1998 6 cyl. Ford Contour, the check
engine light came on. According to the owners manual, it can be one of two things. First the
gas cap could be off, I checked that. The second
thing it could be in the emissions.  What should
I do to get this light turned off.

  To pinpoint the problem you'll have to have a diagnostic check run on the computer.  That will give you trouble codes which you can link to specific sensors or problems.  Some parts stores like Autozone (I believe) will run a test for free and any shop or dealership can do the test, but they'll charge anywhere from $60-$100 usually.  Once you've got the trouble codes then you can move on to fix the problem.  Hope this helps.
