Honda Repair: Honda Accord AT Cable, cable replacement, honda accord
QuestionI have 1992 Accord SW EX with 130K miles here in Seattle. Recently the shifter has gotten harder and harder to pull out of, or push into Park. I took the console off and greased the obvious pieces with little effect. So I went to my dealer and had them diagnose it. They said the cable was frayed and needed replaced. $570 including $350 for the part. I used their wireless internet to check the part prices and found them online between $95 and $130 shipped. My question how difficult is it to change the cable? Specifically, how do you unattach and re-attach it to the transmission end? Thanks!
AnswerSteve, 350 is pretty steep even for a genuine part, I'd check THAT out. As far as the cable replacement, its not bad...but the car should be on a hoist for ease of installation. There is a centre beam that has to be removed(5-14mm bolts)The exhaust has to be lowered to access the cable mounting bolts in the floor. The cable connects to the transmission under a cover(3-12mm bolts) on the rear of the transmission where the trans meets the engine. The cable is connected via a 10mm bolt which connects the control lever to the control shaft. If you get all that you got it made. Good luck RICK
