Hi, Marty.  The air bag is warranted for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.  Unfortunately, in your case, the warranty expired long ago.

There is a recall on 2001 Sonatas regarding a poor connection for the connectors for the side air bags.  Do call your local dealer with your vehicle identification number to be sure this recall is not still open on your vehicle.
