Hyundai Repair: Crank Pulley, hyundai santa fe, crankshaft pulley
QuestionI recently had my front and back brakes, rotors and calipers changed on my 2005 AWD 3.5 liter Hyundai Santa Fe. shortly after I started to hear a knocking, clicking, winding noise. And 2 days later I noticed the battery ( charge light on) and the Brakes light on. I checked the manual and it stated that it may be a slip of the drive belt/serpentine belt. Same day I looked behind my right wheel where I observed the belt and pulley hanging out. Obviously I have not driven it but I would like to know if this is common, and Is this a costly repair?
AnswerThis is neither common nor costly. The crankshaft pulley is made in two pieces-- a center circular piece which attaches to the crankshaft and an annular piece on which the belts ride, joined with a piece of rubber in between them to help absorb vibrations. The typical mode of failure is that the rubber comes loose from one portion and the pulley separates.
It's typically a simple matter to unbolt the pulley and install a new one and reinstall the belts.
