Hyundai Repair: THINK IT IS A STUCK PARKING BRAKE, 2006 hyundai elantra, hyundai elantra
Question2006 HYUNDAI ELANTRA -LAST MONDAY MY WIFE DROVE OUR CAR ABOUT 7 MILES WITH THE PARKING BRAKE ON. sHJE NOTICED SMOKE OUT THE BACK AND FINALLY DISENGAGED THE BRAKE. eVER SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN GRINGING PRETTY BAD AND THERE IS A SMELL OF BURNT COPMING FROM IT WHICH I ASSUME IS THE STEEL TO STEEL. i DON'T KNOW FOR SURE NEVER BEEN THE MECHANICAL TYPE. I ALSO NOTICE A BIT OF LEEWAY ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE HANDLE NOW. I HAVEN'T HAD THE CHANCE TO GET IT INTO A SHOP YET WHICH I ASSUME WILL MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE. I WOULD ACTUALLY LIKE TO DO IT MYSELF IF IT IS NOT TO INVOLVED. SOMEONE SUGGESTED THAT I DRIVE IN REVERSE FOR AT LEAST A 1'4 MILE SO I DID AND IT IS STILL MALKING NOISE.
THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME

AnswerHello Gary,
When you drive the car with emergency brake on, brake shoes/pads get so hot and so crunchy. Basically they loose their gripping ability. They should be replaced and drums/rotors should be resurfaced. It is a bit complicated job so it is better if you can take it to a proffesional.
