QuestionI recently purchased a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe. The mileage figures are 20 around town and 27 on the highway. Yesterday, I drove 327 miles (Redlands, CA to Blythe, CA and return) that were mostly level, unloaded. The 2.7L Six got 17 MPG. The mileage figures are inflated, but 60% or the rated mileage. No "Check Engine" lights. What could be wrong.
AnswerActually, the figures you report are for the four cylinder with a five speed transmission. The 2.7 is EPA rated at 19/25 for the 2WD and 18/23 for the 4WD.
Presuming you did what's considered highway driving (steady speed, little acceleration, no stop-and-go), 17 is still fairly low. Here are a few things you might check:
1. Tire pressures. Low tire pressure will reduce fuel economy.
2. Alignment. Excessive toe will reduce fuel economy.
3. Brakes. It's possible your brakes may be staying applied a little, causing drag.
4. Transmission operation. Make sure it engages all four forward gears normally.
Most other things that can cause poor economy will cause a check engine lamp and/or will only be able to be checked professionally.
