QuestionTwice now, a month apart I have tried to start my 2001 hyundai accent and it
cranks but the engine does not start. I will try for about twenty minutes, but
to no avail. When i try later the car will start fine. Both times my gas guage
shows a quarter tank of gas and it has been cold outside, although I live in
Colorado (at about 7,000 feet) and it has started when it was much colder. I
heard that 2000 accents have a problem with an overdrive wire shorting out -
does this sound like my problem, or could it be due to bad gas (even though
the air has been really dry here?
AnswerA problem with the overdrive wire will disable overdrive but won't make the engine not start. If the car later starts and runs fine, it's a pretty good bet your gas is okay.
I'd suspect a failing crank sensor, but at this point that's just a guess. You could try to pursue this avenue by having your engine diagnostic trouble codes read. If the a crank sensor code (often P0335) comes up, the crank sensor is a good bet. If not, the odds are significantly lower.
