Isuzu Repair: 94 Rodeo Speedometer and Odometer Not Working, vehicle speed sensor, electronic sensor
QuestionQUESTION: About a month ago the speedometer and odometer stopped working on our 94 Rodeo. Wife said that it fluctuated then stopped working. I was going to check the plastic gear at the rear of the transmission first to see if it is stripped but cannot figure out how to get to it. I unscrew the electronic sensor, remove the 12mm bolt and the C washer that keeps the sensor mount locked. I do not know how to get the sensor mount off to see the gear. The mount just rotates. What do I do next? The gear post/axle sticks out and I can turn the post freely telling me that it is probably stripped but I would like to see the gear. Thanks for your help.
ANSWER: Well I would also check the cable as well Chuck as it could be broken or damaged as well. I know some of these actually run off a signal from the transmission that is sent to a receiver on your instrument cluster. Does this fit your description maybe?

QUESTION: The transmission has the vehicle speed sensor mounted on the rear of the transmission. It has a wire harness attached directly to it, so no cables at all. I have not tested the harness with my multimeter yet, but will tomorrow. It sounds like the gear is the usual suspect in these cases and it seems like I should be able to get to it - I just cannot figure out how to get that last part off. The last part being the sensor mount. It rotates, but does not unscrew. I am afraid of trying to pull it out since I am not quite sure if that is the right way to do it.
AnswerActually Chuck I have come across where the connector at the gauge has actually just gone bad. Or loose. I would Check this out because I have had a few emails describing your problem. They had a bad connection on the instrument connection. I am not saying this is 100% your problem but it is something to definatley look at. I will do some research and see if that is really the case although you may nned a special tool to pull the speed sensor. We will get it figured out though.
