Land Rover Repair: 2004 range rover, service person, necessary tools

Trans failure prog comes on after driving for a while and car looses
power.Dealer said signal said it needs a transfer can motor but could not
guarentee this was the problem.My mechanic said I need a transmission,can you
give me some advice please. Thanks George

So one guy says it needs a transfer case motor, and the other guy says it needs a transmission?  Those are pretty different diagnoses.  From my remote location there is no way to guess who's right.  Either is a possibility.  Your question just underscores the need to find a service person who is really competent and posses the necessary tools and training to do the job.  Can a dealer fill that role?  They are supposed to but it's not always so . . . Can an independent?  It's a lot of money for tools and real training, and few go down that road, but some do . . .
