Land Rover Repair: 99 range roover 4.0, vacuum boots, range roover

i just bought a 99 range roover  4.0   the firxt week it was fine  the it started acting up  i push the gas  and it backfires and will not pick up rpms   someone told me it was the maf sensor  what do you think

That's one problem but there are many others and at this point it's nothing more than a guess.  Your first step should be to scan for OBD II fault codes, and make sense of what they say.  Check fuel pressure and make sure you have adequate supply of good quality fuel.  Look for visible mechanical issues, like split intake vacuum boots and plug wire problems.  

I would not start by throwing parts at it until you have a bit more knowledge based upon some tests
