I have a 95 landrover discovery with 193,000 miles. Recently I took my car to the shop to be fixed because of overheating issues. The water pump and thermostat was replaced, also I had a reg tune up done so therefore the plugs, wires, hoses and oil was changed. While driving home , the car overheated again?? I took the car back to the shop after it stopping on me about 3 times and now what I'm told is that it could be the head gasket since everything else was checked and replaced.. which now its going to cost me $900.!!! is this likely ?
AnswerIt's possible that the head gaskets are indeed failed, causing the overheating. However, it is equally likely that the issue is bigger - warped heads, or a slipped liner in the block.
My second comment is that $900 - while a lot to you (based upon what you wrote) - is too cheap a sum to get a proper repair anywhere I know.
At the least, this job requires 10-14 hours of labor, plus a head gasket kit, new head bolts ($200+), and the cost of at least checking and probably resurfacing the heads, or even doing a proper valve job ($60-300)
Anyone who can accomplish that for $900 is either working at a very low rate, or cutting some serious corners.
