QuestionMy wife has a 2002 Land Rover Discovery II SD7, that has 75000 miles we were trying to determine the average life expectancy of these engines/transmissions and the cost to replace? She recently took a job where she will be driving a lot and we wanted to assess her car situation.
AnswerIf treated well, LR engines can go over 200,000 miles. My '95 Range Rover has 145,000 and is still running strong. I commute 40 miles per day in Darcy. The ZF transmissions rarely fail, when they do it's typically a slow death, not outright failure.
Rebuilt transmissions are about $1200, I can't estimate fitting costs.
Engine replacements are not cheap, appx $4,000 for a new engine, used engines can be found between $1-3,000.
Unless you have problems now, the engine and transmission should serve you well. It's all of the little things that get you on a LR, typically not the big things.
A great resource for more information than I have is
www.discoweb.org, or www.rangerovers.net (same engine/transmission combination)
