QuestionI have a 95 Land rover discovery. The problem began with the truck shutting off when I applied hard brakes. To trouble shoot I tried this in neutral, it also stalled. No CEL, I replaced IAC, plug wires, cap rotor, plugs, and gas cap for good measure. No vacuum leaks present. A diagnostic tool was hooked up recently and a vaccum pressure reading of 10 was given. This is substandard for any vacuum, and since the brakes are vacuum assist then that would describe the stall. So the problem is Identified, low vacuum, how or what should be done to fix my dilema. I have some Ideas, other than a new engine, but I would like to know your thoughts.
Thanks,
James
AnswerHi James,
nice Disco! Here's some suggestions:
Check your vacuum advance, base idle, vacuum leaks, T-Piece, air intake hose (for leaks), and also your timing.
Someone who had similar problems had this suggestion given to them:
Incorrect throttle plate/throttle lever position
Incorrect potentiometer adjustment
incorrect accelerator cable adjustment
Defective/disconnected road speed transducer
Ignition timing not within specification
Vacuum leaks
Incorrect fuel pressure
Loss of crankcase seal at oil filler cap or dipstick
Defective stepper motor or other EFI fault
Carbon build-up in throttle housing passageways
Basic engine condition - compression or leak down problems
Someone suggested having your brake system bled by the dealer. They can do a power bleed with the T4 machine that will do wonders for your braking BUT they charge you ~$200 to $300.
Could use a 'can of smoke' and search for the vacuum leak, but if you suspect brakes, it's either ABS modulator or Master C.
Best of luck,
JohnMC
