QuestionI want to buy a range rover 95 2.5 DSE from a local dealer. When I drove the car, I found the change of gear 1 to 2 making noices (sounds like from gear box). However, if i first changed the gear 1 into neutral and then to gear 2, there were not noices any more. For changes of all other gears were quite clear.
My question is : is it in general a problem of gear box? or maybe it is a simple problem of clutch that I can relatively eaily handle?
Thank you very much for your kind reply.
Best,
Alex
AnswerHi Alex,
how eager are you to buy a Rangie? Do you know how much a new or rebuilt TG will cost you? Even a salvaged one will be at least $2000. And it won't stop there...a twelve year old Rangie will have other problems too.
Unless you are about to inherit this Rangie, my advice would be to move on to a newer model - one with no existing problems (that you can tell) and possibly one with a warranty greater than 30/30 (30 miles or 30 minutes).
I've heard that '95's have gear 2 problems and I can confirm this with my Disco. It's always been there and I've learned to live with it. BUT to have more than one gear doing this... I hope you have good mechanical skills, tools and lots of time. If your hearing the noises during the shift then you'll be working on the TG.
Get yourself a good workshop manual and find a local LR mechanic that can back you up when you get stuck during the TG teardown.
Best of luck,
JohnMc
