V Reg 2000cc Diesel I have removed the inner skin and found the cable actually in strands.
Not sure HOW far down the cable the break is although

I'm not sure if splicing is what you want to do here.  Let me ask a fellow Freelander owner I know who recently solved a window problem.

What year is your Freelander?  Do you know how this broke?

replace the entire wire.  The fellow I know in Australia had to repair his tailgate window and it sounds just like your front window.  Seems this is becoming more of a problem for Freelanders.

I am still waiting for an answer on this.  From what I can remember, he replaced the entire cable and it was not an easy job.
