Question99 Discovery 2 with about 85K miles on it... After getting ABS/TC/HD lights intermittently for a couple of days (then no more), I scheduled a shop visit to check this out. They are telling me that I have an electrical fault in the ABS modulator, and need to replace it at ~$2500 (2K for the part alone). The vehicle hasn't had the 3 lights illuminate in the past 10 days at all and seems to be handling normally.
I have had numerous large repairs in the last 2 years, items that in my opinion should not be breaking on a high-end vehicle that has had all scheduled maintenance and gets no off-road activity. The car is paid for so I am not ready to throw in the towel but I am starting to wonder if this is a money pit at this point.
If i do not replace this modulator, do I have normal braking ability? My understanding is that I will not have the additional ABS safety feature, but the brakes will function as a non-ABS car's would. Also, is this type of failure for a 7-yr old Disco II commonplace?
AnswerJoanne, you are in luck.
In March 2006, Land Rover developed a $100 repair kit to fix the modulator problems. 90% of ABS modulator problems are repaired via the kit, and 4 hours of work.
You will need a dealer or a shop with Autologic or T4 system to complete this work.
