My 1989 rover keeps damaging the fuel pump relay.

Hi Joe,

have you considered replacing the fuel pump?  Buy one from a salvage (wrecker) and swap the pump into your LR.  

Other wise, you'll need to test the relay on pin 30 and 87 (I think that's the areas for an '89).

NB: does the '89 have an immobiliser unit like the Series I Disco's?
