QuestionJohn,
I own a 1998 Disco, I love it and pamper it as often as I can. I have 78,500 miles on it and have had a sorted amount of problems, (all I might add were taken care of under factory warranty). I have an extended warranty for another year or 100,000 miles. Just the other day the orange *ANTI LOCK* light came on for the first time. It stayed on for about 10 minutes and then went out. Several days later it came on again I was on a trip of about 200 miles it went out several time but now it stays on all the time. I checked the brake pads and the brake fluid level. I have ordered new pads and topped off the BF resevoir. The light is still on. I called the warranty provider and they said the ABS system itself is covered, not pads, belts, hoses etc. I was hoping you could give me some expert advice. I have asked my dealer, he wants me to bring it in but it will cost me my$200.00 deductible to get him to look at it. Got any Ideas? I am quite mechanically inclined but this has me baffled. Thanks for any help you can send.

AnswerHi Dan,
$200 to look at your Disco? No thanks! Take your Disco to the nearest brake specialist, Meineke, Midas, ... and have them inspect your brakes. Some places will give you a free inspection...but ask first.
Yes, its true that our Disco ABS system is very sensitive and can trigger the light if it suspects a problem. Changing your pads and inspecting the discs may help remove the light. This sensitivity in the ABS testing system is common to all LR Disco's and even the RangeRover. BTW: Raybestos pads are good for your Disco and cost 1/3 the price of OEM pads.
So, save your $200 deductible for more serious work and have a local shop tell you what you need to know for free or, at most, $50.
If you are handy with tools, change the pads yourself and save even bigger! My dealer wanted $800 to do the rear brake pads and change 1 disc. I did the work and it cost me $300 and a Saturday afternoon.
Best of luck,
JohnMc
