Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Transmission interchangability, lincoln town car, shaft lengths
QuestionMy dad has a 1989 Lincoln Town Car with a 302 and auto Trans. It has lost 3rd and 4th gear. 1st, 2nd and reverse seem to be fine.
My brother has a 1984 crown vic with a 302 and an auto trans. The heater core went out on it and he said dad could have the tranny if it would fit. I am enough of a mechanic to make the switch if they are compatible. Dad is retired and cannot afford the 1+++grand to have his fixed.
Will the Crown vic tranny work in the Lincoln?
AnswerHi Blain,
Provided the 84 is an AOD (overdrive) transmission and nothe the c4/5 AND the output shaft lenths are the same, you should be ok. Use the Lincoln torque converter.
Ford used a couple different shaft lengths, I can't remember and can't find any data on the 84, but I know that the Lincoln has the longer of the two.
