Lincoln/Mercury Repair: HVAC control, mercury grand marquis, grand marquis

The slide control for the heat and air temp of my 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis is broken. It's stuck on cool. It slides a little,with resistance but doesn't change temp.How can i fix this?..is it something i can fix myself,or are special tools required?thank you.

by the description it sounds like the leaver for the control might be broken. take the switch out of the dash, disconnect the cable and se if the switch moves freely. if it does than you need a new cable. look for breaks or cracks on the leaver for the temp changer switch.
