Mercedes Benz repair: 1975 Mercedes Benz 230 4 cyl, mercedes benz 230, starter solonoid

Hi,  I just purchased a 1975 Mercedes Benz 230.  The engine will not crank over.  When turning the ignition key, a loud noise, at the starter will sound.  The engine did start once but now it will not.  

Need some help.

Questions:
* Miles on the car?
* Geographic location = nearest major city.
* Is it a wizzing sound?
* is it a grinding/clunking sound?

A wizzing sound = the solonoid is not working = disconnect the battery and replace the starter solonoid.

A grinding/clunking sound could be a bad starter gear and/or flywheel = remove the starter, check the gears for damage, if you are fortunate, only the starter will need to be replaced.
