Please be aware the 240D is a slow car, it will run more miles than you can believe, but it will never be a fast car.
To speed is typically 70 MPH, and your 0 to 60 time depends upon climate, road incline and wind conditions.
I have had a 240D (in perfect condition) on level road up to 85 MPH with a tail wind of 40 MPH, the same vehicle will not reach 70 MPH on a three degree incline.
The joy of the 240D is:
* No speeding tickets.
* With proper maintenance 500,000 miles is not unusual.
* It is a Mercedes Benz. :)
* It is paid off. :)
* You can do all the repairs. :)

The typical reasons are:
* Plugged fuel filters or tank strainer.
* Air leaks into the fuel lines.
* Bad Valve adjustment, they must be adjusted every year or 15000 miles, which ever comes first..
* Linkage adjusted wrong or broken.
* Bad diesel fuel.
* Air filter is plugged.
* Injector timing is wrong.
* Low cylinder compression, if it starts below 40F, you have good compression.
