QuestionMy 85 300TD has started running real loud, and shakes like crazy at idle, it used to run fine. The vacuum pump quit working, I replaced the glow plugs, and it starts ok cold. I have been reading up on the ADL, my question is , Will the vacuum pump not working cause the engine to run like this? It never was so loud as it is now, I was thinking I got some bad diesel fuel, changed both filters. Will it harm the engine to keep driving it like this?
AnswerAnswer:
Stop running this engine...
A failed vacuum pump can break your timing chain, (wreck your engine).
The vacuum pump must be repaired/replaced before any further diagnosis can be done.
From your description, there is a 50/50 risk the pump assembly is junk.
