QuestionI have a 1983 300td and it is hard starting year round. I have changed fuel filters and glow plugs. When it does start it smoke alot. It also lacks power.

Critical information for you to read...
* Adjust your valves.
* Use your primer pump, if it leaks fuel while pumping, replace it with a new unit, when they fail = air is sucked into the fuel system = hard starting and poor running.
* Find another OM617 (MB five cylinder diesel) near you, and compare starter cranking speed, if yours sounds slower, replace the starter.
* Find and replace all old rubber hoses in the fuel system, they micro crack allowing air into the system = hard starting and poor running.
* Inspect your primary filter attached to the primer pump/fuel lift pump for Algae contamination, black particles (similar to Pepper).
* Test for power to your glow plugs.
