QuestionI HAVE A 1990 300 SEL 6CYL./GAS WITH 205K-MILES. WHEN IDILING SOMETIMES RUNS ROUGH OR KILLS. AFTER RESTART, IT WILL SMOOTH OUT. WHEN TAKING OFF FROM DEAD STOP, IT SHUTTERS, LOSES POWER. ONCE ABOVE 20RPM'S OR ABOUT 30-40MPH, IT CORRECTS AND RUNS SMOOTHLY. WHEN PUT TO THE FLOOR, IT SPUTTERS, DEACCELERATES, LUNGES, BACKFIRES AND EVENTUALLY SMOOTES OUT ONCE PASSING GEAR IS MAINTAINED, ROUGH PROCESS. RICH FUEL SMELLS. (BRIEF HISTORY-RECENTLY ALTERNATOR WENT OUT AND MADE A GOD-AWFUL RUKUS, BACKFIRED, SMOKED AND MADE UNDERCARRIAGE NEAR CATALYTIC CONVERTER BRIGHT RED, ALMOST LIKE CATCHING ON FIRE.)I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED TO THE ABOVE. PLEASE RESPOND TO MY PERSONAL E-MAIL ADDRESS
[email protected] or call 601-317-8000. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
AnswerBest guess:
These are all possible + a combination.
#1. Excess fuel dumping.
#2. Valve guides/seals.
#3. Piston rings worn out.
#4. Timing chains worn out.
#5. Catalytic converters bad.
