Mercedes Benz repair: Mercedes 1989 560SEL Check Engine Light, chain breaks, mercedes benz

The check engine light comes on when I am idling,  but goes off at moderate speed. I was told that the timing chain (?belt) should be replaced. If the chain breaks will this cause damage to the engine? Literature indicates if the engine is interference, versus free running, this could cause damage.
