Mercedes Benz repair: C280 1994 noise, vacuum line, vacuum pump

Answer -
This is the vacuum pump that powers your central locking system.
If all locks, including the petrol flap locking unit, then there is no reason for concern.
A broken vacuum line can cause the pump to run longer than it should.

The idle on my C280 1994 surges a little (500-700 rpm)-would this be linked to the vacumn pump as well?

The locking system has no connection to engine operation.
