Mercedes Benz repair: HOOD release, hood latch, mercedesshop

I have a 1985 mercedes benz 190E.  The hood release is not working.
I've tried pulling the latch with pliers among other things.  The cable seems to still be attached but will not release the hood latch.  Do you know of a tool or trick to open the hood?
