QuestionQUESTION: I am trying to identify the engine in my newly acquired 1975 Midget. I find 2 numbers, one stamped on the right side of the engine on the head (orientation is sitting in the driver's seat) at the front. It is TKC1409. The second number is on the block on the left side below the #4 cylinder (1 being the front of the engine). It is FM689UE.
Thanks
Keith
ANSWER: Hi Keith. Your engine number is FM689UE. This is an early MG Midget 1500 engine, very similar to the Triumph Spitfire engine. Are you sure there are only three digits? I would have expected four digits, for example FM1689UE.

QUESTION: You are correct FM6897UE.
I ordered an oil filter (for a 1975 Midget 1500 engine) but the one I received doesn't fit. The threaded hole in the filter is too small. Ended up taking the old (Bosch) filter down to Schucks and buying a Fram PH3614. I'm wondering if this is the original engine? Other online sources say the SN should begin with FP?
AnswerThe other number you gave me is a part number.
I checked, and it is the correct head for a 1500 Midget.
So, you have the correct engine with the correct head.
The engine serial numbers were in a range from SN through SP.
