Hi Jo.  The early MGB had a combined dipstick and filler hole on top of the gearbox.  It is accessible just behind the speaker grille, through a big rubber bung that you will find under the carpet.  Peel back the two ears of the carpet, which may be clipped together with a press-stud fastener.  You will need a small funnel.  Do not over-fill past t he HIGH mark.
