QuestionSaw your article about 12v conversion of the 24v CUCV that was posted back in 2003.
You mentioned then that the 12v starter is expensive. Probably is but I continue to use the 24v starter in my CUCV that has been converted to 12v. And, yes, maybe the 12v system spins the 24v starter over a little slower but it seems to work just fine. I suppose if the 24v starter goes Tango Uniform I'll have to get the 24v starter rebuilt or break down and buy a 12v starter.
BTW, the driver side alternator on my rig was removed to make room for an air conditioning compressor so this CUCV has A/C! Not a bad thing to have in Phoenix. The system still uses 2 12v batteries hooked up in parallel.
Wondering if you see a down side to this particular conversion? Don't see any for now.
Thanks for your time,
Jerry
AnswerHi Jerry,
Not a whole lot of converting to do, because just about everything on the truck orriginally was 12 volt.
I am surprised that the 24 volt starter solenoid pulls in, but hey....if it works, that's great.
I have two 1009's with A/C, but they came as ambulances orriginally, and already had the compressors mounted.
