hi i have been having trouble for over a year now my engine light will come on and the engine will switch off

The engine light typically comes on when the car detects and emission problem, a bad signal from one of the various sensors, or even a spark plug misfires.  You'll need to have a mechanic scan the car's computer for trouble codes, which will help lead to the cause of the problem.
