Mitsubishi Repair: 03 Lancer cigarette lighter, negative probe, 12 volt
QuestionI bought my lancer used and the cigarette lighter was missing. I didn't care too much back then, but it's time to get it fixed. I bought a new receptacle but don't know which wire goes to the side and which one goes to the center. I tried researching it online but couldn't come up with a definite answer, all I could find is that the center carries the positive voltage and the side carries the ground/negative voltage. There is a brown and a black wire. I'm assuming the black is the negative wire and should go on the side. Is that correct?
AnswerBen,
The center does accept the +12volt wire and the side is the ground. If you have a voltmeter, this is easy to figure out. On the voltmeter, put the positive probe on the one wire and the negative probe on the other. If your reading comes out with a +12 volt reading, then you found the correct +12v wire that you connected to the positive probe. If you voltmeter comes out as -12 volts, you know you have the wires reversed. You can typically pick up a cheap voltmeter ($2-$10) from most hardware stores.
Good luck!
