Mitsubishi Repair: transmission, transmission shop, best bet

1994 mitsbishi galant automatic trans.
right know the car won't go in forward or reverse, but prior to this happening the vehicle was being operated in drive, and shot into reverse  without the gear shift being moved

This does sound like an internal transmission problem that you have.  Unfortunately, your problem may require a transmission rebuild or a replacement.  Your best bet would be to have a transmission shop or the dealership inspect your transmission.  Sorry I couldn't be more help.
